Artist Bio

Turn up the energy as Wyclef Jean takes over the CA State Fair on Saturday, July 18, as part of the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage! The concert is FREE with general admission to the fair which runs from July 17 to August 2!

The music that three time Grammy Award winning and Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Wyclef Jean has written, performed, and produced — both as a solo superstar and as founder and guiding member of the Fugees — has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades. In 1996, the Fugees released their monumental album The Score. Since then, Wyclef has released eight albums as a solo artist that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide, including his 1997 debut The Carnival.

2020 found Wyclef venturing into the podcast industry as the host of RunThatBack, a one of a kind weekly show for music lovers of any type, where Wyclef interviews heavy hitters from all walks of life, from music, to sports, politics, and beyond. That same year, he teamed up with Google to create a jingle for their #BlackOwnedFriday campaign to promote and support shopping black-owned businesses for Black Friday during the holiday season. This campaign won a Webby Award, and was nominated for a Clio Award, among others.

In 2021 Wyclef co-founded SodoMoodLab, a jingle and scoring company. In his most recent project with Sodo, Wyclef stepped in as composer for seasons four, five, and six of Showtime’s The Chi, a show created by screenwriter and actress Lena Waithe. In August 2023, Wyclef hosted the annual Caribbean Music Awards, which took place in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently, Wyclef became Co-Chair of the Music Advisory Board of Harlem Festival of Culture, an annual New York City festival which celebrates Black music, culture, and pride.

In 2023, Wyclef partnered with leading retirement planning company TIAA to release “Paper Right,” featuring Pusha T, Lola Brooke, Capella Grey, and Flau’jae. The TIAA x Wyclef campaign raises awareness among America’s youth on the importance of preparing for their future through financial independence, especially the 54% of African Americans who may not have enough funds to retire comfortably. As part of this partnership, all proceeds from “Paper Right” streams are being donated directly to the non-profit organization First Generation Investors, an organization dedicated to empowering underserved high school students with investing literacy.

Most recently, Wyclef signed on as a consultant for Google DeepMind where he dives deeper into the AI Technology space, which coincides with the engineering and scoring work he’s doing in his own company SodoMoodLab.

Tower of Power

Artist Bio

Tower of Power bring their soulful vocals and nonstop energy to the California State Fair on Sunday, July 19 as part of the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage! The concert is FREE with general admission to the fair which runs from July 17 to August 2!

For 58 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music.“We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.

East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968.

50 years later, in 2018, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence, but the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

The band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations, traveling the world, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.

The future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!

With over four decades of success, the group, led by Harry Wayne “KC” Casey, has been in a state of constant renewal in their niche of cultural relevancy–thanks in part to their music being featured in numerous motion picture soundtracks, television shows and national advertising campaigns. KC and The Sunshine Band formed in 1973 with one single purpose: to create instant happiness through music – and the group has done just that, topping the charts with singles including “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Get Down Tonight,” and “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty,” tallying worldwide sales of over 100 million, and receiving numerous awards. In 2013, KC was honored with two distinct Lifetime Achievement Awards, made several television appearances and earned a new star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame in his home state of Florida, which accompanies his previously awarded national recognition of a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. KC and The Sunshine Band continue to tour heavily throughout the U.S. and internationally, as well as colaborate and appear with other superstars. Harry Wayne Casey (b. January 31, 1951) – KC for short — got his start while working at the record store at TK Records in Hialeah, FL, where he often made deliveries and completed other odd jobs, hoping to be able to spend time in the studio after hours for free. There, he met Henry Stone, and in 1973, signed a contract with TK and formed KC and The Sunshine Band”.

The result was the development of a unique fusion of Caribbean, R&B and funk music dubbed the “Miami sound” – a sound that grabbed the hearts and minds of listeners and compelled them to get out of their seats and onto the dance floor!

Keith Sweat

Tuesday, July 28, 2026
Artist Bio

An unforgettable evening of smooth R&B is coming to the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage as Keith Sweat joins the CA State Fair on Tuesday, July 28. The concert is FREE with general admission to the fair which runs from July 17 to August 2!

Keith Sweat was born in Harlem, New York to Charles and Juanita Sweat not far from the world-famous Apollo Theater. Unfortunately, at the age of 12, Keith lost his father, a factory worker. He attended City College of New York and received a degree in communications. While in college he worked at Macy’s as a clerk. Before beginning his career as an artist he worked in the New York Stock Exchange in the commodities market.

Early Career

In 1975 Sweat was a member of the band Jamilah in Harlem. With this band he traveled and performed throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In 1984 he branched out on his own and frequently performed in New York City nightclubs. He recorded one single “My Mind Is Made Up” with Stadium records an independent label that had only released two albums prior to Sweats. He co-wrote and co-produced “You Are The One For Me” by the group GQ for Stadium records. During that time he also wrote and produced the song “All I Want is My Baby” for singer Roberta Gilliam in 1985.

Make It Last Forever

In November 1987 Keith Sweat released his debut album Make It Last Forever and set his path towards fame and success. He enjoyed many successes as a result of this album, skyrocketing towards the top of both R&B and pop charts and selling over three million copies. Four of the songs on this album landed on the pop or R&B charts and in some cases both. The hit “I Want Her” skyrocketed to number one on the R&B charts while hitting number five on the pop charts. The songs “Make It Last Forever” reached number two and “Something Just Ain’t Right” reached number three both on the R&B charts. As a result of his success with this album, Sweat moved away from his job as a brokerage assistant on Wall Street.

I’ll Give All My Love to You and Keep It Comin’

His second album, I’ll Give All My Love to You was released in 1990 and reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart. this album contained the hits “Make You Sweat” which reached number one on the R&B charts and number 14 on the pop charts. “I give All My Love to You” also reached number one on the R&B charts and number seven on the pop charts. The song “Merry Go Round” made number two and “Your Love, Pt. 2 number four on the R&B charts. From that album the singles ” By the end of 1991 Sweat released his third album entitled Keep It Comin’. Although this album did not reach the same level of success as his first two albums, it debuted in the Top 20. The title track to this album went to number 1 in the R&B charts.

New Jack Swing

In the late 80s into the early 90s a new sound began to emerge called New Jack Swing. This form incorporated hip-hop with contemporary soul, high-tech funk and in some cases rap and lasted for approximately six years. Keith Sweat was considered one of the stars of the new jack swing era highly influential when it comes to this form of music. In fact, many historians studying this form of music feel that it was his 1987debut album Make It Last Forever that kicked off the genre. His 1991 album Keep it Coming and the track “Why Me Baby” featuring LL Cool J is considered one of his final New Jack Swing albums.

Following Albums

In 1994 he released a fourth album entitled Get Up On It. From this album he had yet another hit in the track “How Do You Like It?” In 1996 he entered a non-music related endeavor by opening the nightclub “The Industry” which was meant as a nightclub for celebrities where they could relax with other celebrities. Following the opening of his club Sweat released a fifth album simply named Keith Sweat. The tracks “Twisted” and “Nobody” moved up to the top five on the pop charts. In 1998 he released the album Still in the Game which went Platinum. He has continued to release albums, although these later ventures have not reached the level of success that his earlier albums achieved. In 2000 he released the album Didn’t See Me Coming, in 2002 Rebirth and in 2003 Keith Sweat Live; all under Elektra. In 2007 he releases the Christmas album Christmas of Love and Sweat Hotel Live. In 2008 with the label Atco, Sweat released Just Me and Some More. His most recent album as of 2011 is Ridin’ Solo, which was released in 2010 by Kedar.

WAR

Artist Bio

Get ready to groove and sing along to popular hits like “Why Can’t We Be Friends”, “Low Rider”, “Spill the Wine”, and “The Cisco Kid”. WAR performs on the final Saturday of the California State Fair, as part of the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage on August 1, 2026. The concert is FREE with general admission to the fair which runs from July 17 to August 2!

WAR’s signature fusion of funk, soul, jazz, Latin, rock and street music is what first propelled them to prominence over five decades ago, but it was their ability to craft songs of social consciousness that further cemented their place in the modern American songbook. The immediate global impact of “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” was so profound that NASA transmitted the title track into space during the historic Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. Since then, WAR have continued to sing out against racism, hunger, crime and conflict, while their music has been sampled by Janet Jackson, Tupac, Beastie Boys, Method Man, Sublime, Redman, Cypress Hill, Shaggy, A$AP Mob, Scarface, The Geto Boys, De La Soul, Flo Rida, Liam Payne, Thomas Rhett and more, and covered by everyone from Willie Nelson to The Muppets, George Clinton, Phish, ZZ Top and The Isley Brothers.

With more than 50 million albums sold, 20 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records, three Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations, a GRAMMY® Hall of Fame entry, four #1 LPs, nine Top 10s and twenty Top 40 songs, WAR didn’t just define the sound of the 1970s, they became a lasting voice for creative collaboration and social change, with a mission of love and harmony that resonates now more than ever. From the prophetic message of “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” to the timeless groove of “Low Rider,” this collection captures WAR at their most innovative and socially impactful. More than just a musical milestone, Why Can’t We Be Friends? (50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition) reaffirms the album’s relevance, both as a reflection of the polarizing era that inspired it, and as a beacon of hope for our present and future.

As WAR continues its sixth decade, their influence remains undeniable. Recent honors including their inductions/presentation of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a key to the city of Long Beach, further cement WAR’s status as musical and cultural giants.
