The California First Peoples’ Art Showcase celebrates the rich artistic traditions, cultural heritage, and living history of California tribes from across the state. The exhibit features California Indian basketry, traditional and contemporary art and design, cultural art demonstrations, traditional canoe and tule boat, and American Indian artisans and vendors.

Fairgoers can experience the creativity, craftsmanship, and resilience of California’s First Peoples. More than an art exhibit, the Showcase provides an opportunity to learn about the diverse tribal cultures that have shaped California since time began, while honoring the traditions, stories, and artistic expressions that continue to thrive today.

Building on Cal Expo’s long-standing rodeo tradition, California Indian “Buffalo Riders” became a unique and memorable part of the California State Fair’s history. A dedicated Showcase exhibit will highlight these skilled 1970s riders, honoring both the excitement of rodeo culture and the enduring presence of California Indian communities.
